Thank you for being with me during this incredible journey. I am deeply grateful for your support.
We came within a single percentage point of winning, and, more importantly, we shaped the debate.
I’m proud that we won roughly 385,000 votes statewide. I agree with what a supporter said about our campaign: "We lost the race by a whisker, but we won friends in a landslide."
I’m proud of the campaign we ran----positive, issues-oriented and grounded on ideas to make state government more open and more honest. Our campaign reminded the people of Illinois that the comptroller’s office can and should serve as their servant---a watchdog that prevents wasteful spending and self-dealing behavior.
Finally, I’m very proud of the way we paid for our effort. Our campaign was financed by thousands of individual contributors, many of them first-time donors to a political contest. That our message engaged so many people bodes well for the democratic process and for our state.
Our effort to change the “pay-to-play” culture of Illinois is not over. With the commitment and generosity of good friends like you, I am confident we can reform the way Illinois does business and enjoy the honest and accountable government we deserve.
Raja
Former Deputy Illinois State Treasurer Raja Krishnamoorthi has the government experience and stellar legal and educational credentials to help reform government. He has consistently demonstrated the leadership to challenge the corruption in state government and contracting that has contributed to the record state deficit.
As Deputy Treasurer, Raja was responsible for overseeing programs in the Illinois Treasurer’s Office involving the custody and administration of billions of dollars in state funds. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Treasurer, Raja served on the board of the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA), becoming chair of its Audit Committee. During his service, IHDA helped provide thousands of low- and moderate-income families across Illinois with affordable housing. Later, Raja was appointed as a Special Assistant Attorney General to help start the public corruption unit in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.
Raja ran for Illinois State Comptroller in the 2010 Democratic Primary. He won roughly 385,000 votes statewide, but fell short of winning the primary by 1 single percentage point.
A longtime friend of President Barack Obama, Raja worked on President Obama’s successful 2004 campaign for the U.S. Senate, serving first as the issues director for his primary campaign and then as a senior adviser in his general election campaign. Raja also advised Obama during his Presidential campaign and worked on his 2000 campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.
Raja’s parents are immigrants from India and brought their three month-old son with them to Buffalo, New York, where Raja’s father attended graduate school in engineering. Later, the family moved to Peoria when Raja’s father received an offer to teach at Bradley University. Some 30 years later, Raja’s father remains on the faculty of Bradley University, and his parents live in the same home where Raja was raised. Raja attended public schools in Peoria, played junior varsity football and graduated from Richwoods High School as a valedictorian. Raja made some of his closest friendships in Peoria, and his years living in Peoria helped form the values and principles that guide him today.
From Peoria, Raja went to Princeton University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in public policy. After he worked two years in management consulting, Raja attended Harvard Law School, graduating with honors. After clerking for a federal judge in Illinois, he joined a large Illinois law firm where he became a partner, leaving in 2007 to become Deputy State Treasurer. Raja stepped down as Deputy State Treasurer in April 2009 prior to forming an exploratory committee for Illinois Comptroller.
Raja, 36, is married to Priya, a doctor, and they have two sons: Vijay, 4, and Vikram, born in May 2009. They live in the Northwest Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates.
